God’s Beloved Son

When Jesus became an adult, he traveled to the Jordan River. There he met John the Baptist, who was inviting people to turn toward God and begin a new way of living.

People came from many places to be baptized in the river as a sign of their desire to follow God.

When Jesus asked John to baptize him, John was surprised.

“I should be the one asking You,” John said.

But Jesus answered, “This is the right thing to do.”

So John baptized Jesus in the Jordan River.

As Jesus came up out of the water, something wonderful happened.

The heavens seemed to open.

The Holy Spirit came down like a dove and rested upon Jesus.

Then a voice from heaven said,

“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

Everyone there saw that Jesus had been sent by God to bring good news, healing, hope, and peace to the world.

From that day forward, Jesus began his public ministry. He would teach people about God’s love, welcome those who were left out, heal those who were hurting, and invite everyone into God’s kingdom.

Jesus’ baptism reminds us that we, too, are deeply loved by God.

Before Jesus performed miracles or preached sermons, God called him beloved. God’s love is a gift, not something we earn. We are invited to live as God’s beloved children every day.

Growing in Wisdom

Every year, Mary and Joseph traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover festival. When Jesus was twelve years old, they all made the journey together.

After the festival ended, everyone began traveling home. Mary and Joseph thought Jesus was with friends or relatives.

But when they looked for him, they could not find him anywhere.

They hurried back to Jerusalem and searched for three days.

At last, they found Jesus in the Temple.

He was sitting with the teachers, listening carefully, asking thoughtful questions, and sharing wise answers. Everyone who heard him was amazed by his understanding.

Mary said, “Child, why have you treated us this way? We have been so worried!”

Jesus answered gently, “Didn’t you know I would be in my Father’s house?”

Mary and Joseph did not fully understand what he meant, but they loved him deeply.

Jesus returned home with them to Nazareth. He obeyed his parents, learned from them, and continued to grow.

The Bible tells us that Jesus grew in wisdom, in strength, and in favor with God and with other people.

Even Jesus spent time learning, listening, asking questions, and growing. Every day was another opportunity to become wiser and more loving.

Following the Bright Star

After Jesus was born, a bright new star appeared in the sky.

Far away in the East, wise visitors studied the stars. When they saw the special star, they knew something wonderful had happened.

“A new king has been born,” they said. “Let us go and honor him.”

They packed valuable gifts and began a long journey. Day after day and night after night, they followed the shining star.

When they arrived in Jerusalem, they asked,

“Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews?”

King Herod heard their question. Instead of feeling joyful, he became afraid because he wanted to keep all the power for himself.

The wise visitors continued their journey, and the bright star led them to the place where Jesus and his family were staying.

When they saw the child, they were filled with joy.

They knelt before Jesus and offered their gifts:

• Gold, a gift fit for a king.
• Frankincense, a sweet-smelling gift used in worship.
• Myrrh, a precious perfume.

That night, God warned the wise visitors in a dream not to return to King Herod.

So they traveled home by a different road, keeping the child safe.

The wise visitors came from another land, reminding us that Jesus came for people everywhere. God’s love reaches across every nation, language, and culture.

Wise people seek Jesus with open hearts. Like the wise visitors, we can offer our own gifts—our kindness, our generosity, and our love—to God and to others.

The Greatest Gift

When it was time for the baby to be born, Mary and Joseph traveled to the town of Bethlehem. Many people had come there, and every guest room was full.

There was no place for them to stay except a humble shelter where animals were kept.

That night, baby Jesus was born.

Mary gently wrapped him in soft cloths and laid him in a manger filled with clean straw.

The Savior of the world came, not to a palace, but to a simple place.

Nearby, shepherds were watching their sheep in the fields.

Suddenly, the sky shone with the light of God’s glory. An angel appeared and said,

“Do not be afraid! I bring you good news of great joy for all the people. Today a Savior has been born for you.”

Then the sky was filled with a great choir of angels singing,

“Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to everyone whom God loves.”

The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem.

There they found Mary, Joseph, and baby Jesus, just as the angel had said.

They knelt beside the manger, filled with wonder and joy.

Afterward, the shepherds told everyone they met about the amazing child they had seen.

Mary quietly treasured all these things in her heart.

Jesus came into the world to show everyone how much God loves them.

Jesus reminds us that greatness is found in humility, love, and service. God’s greatest gift came in the simplest of places, showing that every person is precious in God’s eyes.

Mary Says “Yes”

In the small town of Nazareth lived a young woman named Mary. She loved God and tried to live with kindness, humility, and faith.

One day, God sent the angel Gabriel to visit her.

“Greetings, Mary,” the angel said. “God is with you.”

Mary was surprised and wondered what the angel meant.

Gabriel gently continued,

“Do not be afraid. God has chosen you for a special purpose. You will have a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will show the world God’s love.”

Mary had many questions. She did not understand everything that was about to happen.

But Gabriel assured her,

“Nothing will be impossible with God.”

Mary trusted God, even though the future was uncertain.

She answered,

“Here I am, the servant of the Lord. Let it be with me according to your word.”

Mary’s joyful “yes” became the beginning of a wonderful story. Through her love and courage, Jesus would come into the world to bring hope, peace, healing, and joy to all people.

Mary teaches us that faith is often saying “yes” to God with open hearts, even when we do not know what comes next.

Messengers of Hope

For many years, God sent special people called prophets to speak to the people.

The prophets reminded everyone to love God, care for the poor, welcome strangers, and treat others with kindness and fairness.

Sometimes the people listened.

Sometimes they did not.

Even when the people forgot God’s ways, the prophets never stopped sharing hope.

The prophet Isaiah said that one day a child would bring light into the darkness. He spoke about a peaceful kingdom where people would no longer hurt one another and where even the animals would live together in safety.

The prophet Jeremiah promised that God would make a new covenant—a new promise. God’s love would not just be written on stone tablets. It would be written on people’s hearts.

The prophet Micah taught that God asks us to do three simple things:

• Do justice.
• Love kindness.
• Walk humbly with God.

The prophets reminded everyone that God’s dream is a world filled with peace, mercy, and love.

Many years later, Christians believe these promises were fulfilled in Jesus, who showed the world what God’s love looks like.

God wants us to build a world where everyone is treated with dignity and compassion. Every act of kindness, fairness, and peace helps make God’s dream a little more real.

Bible Reading: Daniel 6

Trusting God No Matter What

Daniel loved God with all his heart. He worked hard, told the truth, and was kind to everyone. Because he was honest and wise, the king trusted him with important work.

Some of the other leaders became jealous of Daniel. They wanted to get him into trouble, but they could not find anything wrong with the way he lived.

So they made a sneaky plan.

They convinced the king to make a new law that said everyone had to pray only to the king for thirty days. Anyone who disobeyed would be thrown into a den of lions.

Daniel heard about the new law.

He knew it would be dangerous, but he continued to pray to God every day, just as he always had.

The jealous leaders saw Daniel praying and reported him to the king.

The king was very sad because he cared about Daniel, but he had to follow the law.

Daniel was placed in the lions’ den.

That night, the king could not sleep. He hoped Daniel would be safe.

Early the next morning, the king hurried to the den and called out,

“Daniel, has your God been able to save you?”

Daniel answered,

“My God sent an angel to protect me.”

Daniel was safe. The lions had not harmed him.

The king rejoiced and praised God for Daniel’s faithfulness.

Daniel’s story reminds us that we can trust God and keep doing what is right, even when it is difficult.

Faith means staying true to what is good and loving, even when it is hard. God is with us in scary moments and gives us courage to keep going.

Bible Reading: The Book of Jonah

A Big Fish and an Even Bigger Mercy

God asked the prophet Jonah to go to the great city of Nineveh.

“Tell the people to turn away from hurting others and begin living with kindness and justice.”

But Jonah did not want to go. He thought the people of Nineveh did not deserve God’s mercy.

So Jonah ran the other way!

He boarded a ship, hoping to get as far away as possible.

Soon a fierce storm swept across the sea. The sailors were frightened and prayed for help.

Jonah realized he could not run from God. When he was thrown into the sea, the storm became calm.

Then God sent a great fish to rescue Jonah.

For three days and three nights, Jonah stayed inside the fish. There he prayed and remembered that God never gives up on people.

The fish gently carried Jonah back to dry land.

This time, Jonah obeyed God.

He traveled to Nineveh and shared God’s message. The people listened. They stopped their violence, turned toward kindness, and changed their ways.

God showed them mercy.

Jonah became upset because he wanted God to punish them.

But God gently reminded Jonah that God’s love is for everyone—even people we find difficult to love.

God cares about every person and wants everyone to have the chance to choose compassion, justice, and peace.

What Can We Learn?

God’s mercy is bigger than our anger. God invites everyone to change, grow, and begin again. We are called to celebrate when people choose love over harm.

God Speaks Softly

The prophet Elijah had been very brave, but now he was tired and afraid. He ran into the wilderness and sat down under a small broom tree.

“I’ve had enough,” Elijah prayed.

God saw how exhausted Elijah was. Before asking Elijah to do anything, God sent an angel with fresh bread and water.

“Get up and eat,” the angel said.

Elijah rested, ate, drank, and grew stronger.

Then he traveled to Mount Horeb, where he waited for God.

A powerful wind swept across the mountain. It was so strong that it broke rocks apart.

But God was not in the wind.

Next came an earthquake.

But God was not in the earthquake.

Then came a blazing fire.

But God was not in the fire.

After the fire came a gentle whisper.

When Elijah heard the quiet voice, he covered his face and stepped outside to listen.

God spoke with love.

“Elijah, you are not alone.”

God encouraged Elijah, gave him new work to do, and reminded him that many faithful people were still following God.

Elijah discovered that God often speaks, not with loud noises, but in quiet moments of peace, comfort, and love.

Sometimes we expect God to speak through dramatic events, but often God’s voice comes gently. When we rest, pray, and listen with quiet hearts, we may become more aware of God’s loving presence.

The Best Gift

After King David died, his son Solomon became the new king of Israel. Solomon knew that leading a whole nation was a big responsibility.

One night, God spoke to Solomon in a dream.

“Ask for whatever you would like Me to give you.”

Solomon could have asked for riches, a long life, or great power.

Instead, he said,

“Please give me wisdom so I can lead Your people with kindness, fairness, and understanding.”

God was pleased with Solomon’s answer.

Because Solomon chose wisdom instead of wealth or power, God blessed him with great understanding. People came from many lands to hear Solomon’s wise words.

One day, two women came to Solomon with a very difficult problem. They both claimed to be the mother of the same baby.

Solomon listened carefully to both women. Then he suggested a plan that revealed who truly loved the child.

The real mother would rather give up her own wishes than see her child harmed.

Solomon immediately knew who the child’s mother was and returned the baby to her.

Everyone saw that true wisdom listens carefully, seeks justice, and protects those who are vulnerable.

Solomon reminded God’s people that wisdom is one of the greatest gifts anyone can receive.

Wisdom means more than knowing many facts. It means listening well, being fair, making loving choices, and caring for others.
