The Shepherd Who Knows Us

One day, Jesus told the people,

“I am the Good Shepherd.”

Everyone knew what a shepherd did. A shepherd cared for the sheep, led them to fresh grass and cool water, protected them from danger, and stayed with them day and night.

Jesus said that the Good Shepherd knows every sheep by name.

When the shepherd calls, the sheep recognize the familiar voice and follow because they know they are safe.

Jesus explained that he loves people in the same way.

He knows each one of us.

He knows our names, our joys, our fears, and our dreams.

When we feel lonely, Jesus is with us.

When we are afraid, Jesus walks beside us.

When we lose our way, Jesus gently leads us back.

The Good Shepherd never forgets a single sheep.

Jesus also said that he came so that everyone might have life—life that is full of hope, joy, peace, and love.

Like a caring shepherd, Jesus invites us to care for one another too.

What Can We Learn?

Jesus knows and loves each person personally. We are never forgotten or alone. As followers of Jesus, we are called to protect, encourage, and care for others with the same gentle love.

Be a good shepherd today. Look after someone who needs encouragement, include someone who feels left out, or help care for an animal or God’s creation.

Prayer

Dear God,

Thank You for sending Jesus, our Good Shepherd. Help us listen for His loving voice and care for others with kindness, gentleness, and compassion.
