Sister Abigail Hester
The Urban Pilgrim Nun
Welcome.
I am Sister Abigail Hester, an interfaith minister and what I call an Urban Pilgrim Nun. My monastery is not hidden behind stone walls. It lives in the streets, parks, staircases, river paths, and neighborhoods of the city.
I believe the sacred is not confined to temples or churches. It appears wherever we slow down enough to notice it.
Each day I practice urban pilgrimage—walking through the city with awareness, curiosity, and compassion. Sometimes that means climbing steep staircases in the park. Sometimes it means watching the sunrise over the river. Sometimes it means simply greeting a stranger with kindness.
Pilgrimage does not require traveling across continents.
Sometimes the holiest journeys begin right outside your front door.
As an interfaith minister, I draw wisdom from many spiritual traditions. Christianity, Buddhism, Indigenous teachings, contemplative practices, and the insights of many faiths all contribute to the path I walk. I believe the divine speaks through many voices and reveals itself in countless ways.
My mission is simple:
- Walk gently through the world
- Seek wisdom wherever it appears
- Honor the sacred in every tradition
- Discover adventure in everyday life
Through writing, teaching, and sharing my daily micro-adventures here in Richmond, Virginia, I hope to inspire others to rediscover the ancient practice of pilgrimage in their own lives.
You do not need to travel far to begin.
The path is already beneath your feet.
So take a breath, step outside, and walk on.
