Safe in God’s Care

Many years after Joseph lived in Egypt, the Israelites had grown into a great nation. A new Pharaoh became afraid of them. Instead of treating them with kindness, he made them work as slaves.

Pharaoh even gave a cruel command that baby Hebrew boys should not be allowed to live.

During this frightening time, a baby boy was born to a Hebrew family. His parents loved him very much and wanted to keep him safe. For three months they hid him in their home.

When they could hide him no longer, his mother carefully placed him in a basket made from reeds. She covered it so it would float and gently set it among the tall grasses along the Nile River.

The baby’s big sister, Miriam, watched from nearby to see what would happen.

Soon Pharaoh’s daughter came to the river to bathe. She saw the basket and asked one of her helpers to bring it to her.

When she opened the basket, she found the tiny baby crying.

Her heart filled with compassion.

“I will care for this child,” she said.

Miriam bravely stepped forward.

“Would you like me to find someone to care for the baby?” she asked.

“Yes,” Pharaoh’s daughter replied.

Miriam hurried home and brought the baby’s own mother! She was able to care for her son until he was old enough to live in Pharaoh’s palace.

Pharaoh’s daughter named him Moses, because she had drawn him out of the water.

God watched over Moses from the very beginning. One day, God would use him to help set God’s people free.

What Can We Learn?

God cares for us through the courage and kindness of others. Even in dangerous times, hope can grow because people choose compassion.

Dear God,

Thank You for watching over us and for the people who care for us. Help us to be brave, compassionate, and ready to protect those who need our help.
