Love Is Stronger Than Hurt

Jacob had twelve sons, and one of them was named Joseph. Joseph’s father gave him a beautiful colorful robe. His brothers became jealous because they thought Joseph was loved more than they were.

One day, Joseph’s brothers did something very wrong. They sold him to traders who took him far away to Egypt. Joseph was lonely and missed his family, but God stayed with him.

Life was not easy for Joseph. He was treated unfairly and even spent time in prison. Still, Joseph trusted God and tried to do what was right.

One day, Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, had strange dreams that no one could explain. God helped Joseph understand their meaning. Joseph warned that years of plenty would be followed by years of famine.

Pharaoh placed Joseph in charge of preparing the country. Joseph stored grain during the good years so there would be enough food during the famine.

When the famine came, people traveled from many places to buy grain—including Joseph’s own brothers.

At first, they did not recognize him.

Joseph had a choice. He could get even, or he could forgive.

Joseph chose forgiveness.

With tears in his eyes, he said, “I am your brother Joseph.”

His brothers were frightened, but Joseph smiled and hugged them.

“Do not be afraid,” he said. “God has brought good even through difficult times. I forgive you.”

Joseph welcomed his whole family to Egypt, where they were safe and had food to eat.

The family was together again because forgiveness was stronger than anger.

What Can We Learn?

Forgiveness is not always easy, but it can bring healing. God can help us find hope even after painful experiences and can bring good from difficult times.

If someone has hurt your feelings, pray for them today. If it is safe and appropriate, offer kindness or forgiveness. If you have hurt someone, say, “I’m sorry,” and try to make things right.

Prayer

Dear God,

Thank You for showing us the power of forgiveness. Help us let go of anger, choose kindness, and trust that You can bring hope from hard times.
