Bible Reading: Genesis 11:1–9

Many Languages, One Human Family

Long ago, everyone spoke the same language. People gathered together and said, “Let’s build a great city with a tower that reaches toward the sky. Then everyone will know how important we are.”

So they made bricks and worked hard. Higher and higher the tower grew.

But God knew that the people were becoming too proud. Instead of working together with love and humility, they wanted to make themselves greater than everyone else.

God confused their language so they could no longer understand one another. Some spoke one language, while others spoke another. Soon the people spread out across the earth and built new homes in many different places.

The city was called Babel because that is where the languages became different.

Even though people now spoke many languages, they were still one human family, created and loved by God.

Today, people speak thousands of languages, live in many cultures, and have different traditions. These differences are not something to fear. They are part of the beautiful variety of God’s world.

God invites us to listen, learn from one another, and build bridges of peace wherever we go.

What Can We Learn?

Pride can pull people apart, but humility and love bring people together. God delights in the many languages, cultures, and peoples of the world.

Learn how to say “peace” or “thank you” in another language. Celebrate someone whose culture is different from your own, and remember that every person is your neighbor.

Prayer

Dear God,

Thank You for the many languages and cultures You have given our world. Help us to be humble, kind, and ready to learn from one another. Teach us to build bridges of peace instead of walls of pride.
