Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 3:1–21

“Speak, Lord, Your Servant Is Listening”

A young boy named Samuel lived at the tabernacle with Eli the priest. Samuel helped with the daily work of worship and learned about God as he grew.

One night, after everyone had gone to sleep, Samuel heard someone call his name.

“Samuel!”

Samuel jumped up and ran to Eli.

“Here I am,” he said. “You called me.”

But Eli replied, “I didn’t call you. Go back to bed.”

So Samuel lay down again.

A second time, he heard the voice.

“Samuel!”

Again he ran to Eli.

“I am here!”

Eli smiled gently.

“I didn’t call you.”

When Samuel heard his name a third time, Eli understood what was happening.

He said, “If you hear the voice again, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’”

Samuel returned to bed.

Soon the voice came once more.

“Samuel! Samuel!”

This time Samuel answered,

“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.”

God spoke to Samuel, and from that day on, Samuel continued to grow in wisdom, faith, and courage. He became a prophet who helped guide God’s people with honesty and love.

Samuel learned that God can speak in quiet moments and that listening carefully is an important part of following God.

What Can We Learn?

God still invites us to listen with open hearts. We may hear God’s guidance through prayer, Scripture, wise friends, loving family members, or the quiet nudges to do what is kind and right.
