Our Mission

The Order of Franciscan Clareans is a progressive Christian religious community dedicated to following the poor, queer, and crucified Christ through lives of simplicity, contemplation, compassion, justice, and radical love.

Rooted in the spiritual legacy of Francis and Clare of Assisi, we seek to embody the Gospel in ways that are relevant to the challenges of the modern world. We believe that the call of Christ is not merely to personal piety, but to the transformation of ourselves, our communities, and the systems that shape our lives.

We are committed to living simply, loving boldly, caring for creation, pursuing peace, and standing in solidarity with those who have been marginalized, oppressed, or excluded. We affirm the sacred worth and dignity of every person regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, ability, economic status, or religious background.

Through prayer, study, contemplation, pastoral care, advocacy, and acts of service, Franciscan Clareans seek to make visible the compassionate presence of God in the world.

Our Vision for Ministry

The Order ordains and commissions ministers who are called to serve as compassionate shepherds, prophetic voices, community builders, chaplains, teachers, and advocates for justice.

Our clergy and religious are formed in a tradition that values:

  • Radical hospitality and inclusion
  • Nonviolence and peacemaking
  • Care for the poor and vulnerable
  • Ecological stewardship
  • Modern biblical scholarship
  • Spiritual formation and contemplative practice
  • Trauma-informed pastoral care
  • Respect for human dignity and diversity
  • Service over status
  • Love over judgment

We believe that ordination is not a privilege of power, but a vocation of service. Those called to ministry within the Order of Franciscan Clareans are commissioned to accompany people wherever they are found—in churches, homes, hospitals, shelters, streets, online communities, and places where traditional religious institutions may never reach.

Our Motto

Live Simply. Love Boldly. Resist Empire. Follow Christ.

Our Call

We invite all who feel called to a ministry of compassion, justice, contemplation, and radical inclusion to discern whether God may be calling them to serve alongside us as Franciscan Clarean ministers.

Together, we seek to build communities where all people can belong deeply, grow spiritually, and participate in the healing of the world.
